Her readers, mostly know her by T.B. Johnson or Tywanda Brown-Johnson but her friends call her Ty. The thing is, Newberry, South Carolina gave birth to a passionate writer who not only writes the steamy love stories a lot of readers grave, but she also writes about those "hard pill" topics too. Tywanda discovered her love for writing back in '97, the passing of her father led her to a talent she didn't know she had in her. Creating heartfelt poetry and detailed stories, suddenly became a joy for her. Tywanda continued to master her new skill, venturing into different writing styles because she herself enjoyed reading different types of storylines. She wanted to be risqué like her favorite author, the multi-award winning K.R. Bankston.
"Mrs. Bankston has a way of making you fall in love with the bad guy and that's not an easy feat."
Tywanda's love for the art of storytelling grew with every sentence she wrote. But it wasn't until 2014 when she finally wanted to share that love with the world. "Love Games" was her debut urban fiction drama about being a sidepiece and fighting to be the main. Review after review flooded in with anticipation for book two because the clever Ty left her readers with a cliffhanger. The page turning debut novel's success was the affirmation Tywanda needed to see and she was hooked. "Love Games" turned into a three-part series and the stories kept pouring out one after another.
"For this to be the author's first book it was amazing. Even though she had a lot of characters I was able to keep up with them because they were so well developed. But that ending was jaw dropping and left me on the edge of my seat wanting more."
Word got out and other authors wanted to work with the authoress with a flare for the dramatics. Collaborations became the topic of conversation, and a collection of anthologies were the results. "Wives with Secrets", "Alpha Males in Uniforms Anthology" and "A Tale of Two Deadly Divas" tantalized readers with every page turn. The genre of erotica became Tywanda's new home for writing with several other anthologies to come, but she never left her first love of urban fiction behind.
What started out as an outlet for Ty turned into a passion and we asked her how does she come up with this stuff. She smiled as she replied, "I actually start with the climax of the story first, then the plot ending because they act as goals throughout the writing of my stories." So, in other words, she already knows she'll have you hooked on a story with a cliffhanger before she even finishes the book. Right now, Tywanda has 18 books under her belt with at least 3 in the works as we speak. Yes, 3 books she's working on at the same time, but her ultimate goal is seeing one of her steamy books turn into a feature film.
Following behind her favorite author, Ty hasn't come up short on gaining awards and recognition either. In 2014 she was nominated for best new author by Urban Books, in 2016 and 2018 she was named one of the top 100 authors of the year by UBAWA. The novelist also have been to several book events, the most recent being the Juneteenth Festival and she's looking forward to attending more. Meeting her fans is what motivates her to write more.
