Kimberly Brown, the Emotional Sunflower w/ a lot of Black Girl Magic

Updated: Jun 22, 2023

South Carolina's very own, Kimberly Brown was born in a small town called Branchville. Many may not know about Branchville, South Carolina but it's the home to the world's oldest railroad junction. Built in 1828, the stories that place holds are irreplaceable and we can see why Kimberly has so many stories to share in her, it's in her bloodline. She first fell in love with the art of storytelling in high school where she was the school's storybook for her classmates. See, Kimberly had these notebooks she would write her short stories in and like wildfire, word got around real quick that Kim had that "fiyah" in the form of a storyline. Classmate after classmate swapped notebooks throughout the school with one another, entangled in the world Kimberly created on the pages. After high school Kimberly gained a degree in psychology from SCSU and now works for the Department of Mental Health in Columbia, SC. Being a voice for those that needed help with their mental stability didn't keep Kimberly from her first love. Writing was an escape, an outlet and a soothing of emotions that pulled her away for a moment from the stresses of the real world. She found that writing actually helped her with her own anxiety at times and in return made it possible for her to help others.

In 2019, Kimberly self-published her first ever novel. A novel she has since, taken down from all platforms, so if you just so happen to have an original copy of it, you have a true gem on your hands. The fanfare wasn't what she expected it to be as a newly published author and it humbled the storyteller a little. Being a rookie in the game, she made rookie mistakes, but she learned as she moved forward. In 2021, Kim put her "big girl" pants on and stepped into the world of renowned author B. Love. She signed with the best seller and the world was introduced to the urban, contemporary and sometimes erotica author.

"B. Love has been one of my biggest blessings. I’ve learned and I’m still learning so much from her."

Kimberly's selection of favorite authors speak for themselves. With names like Terry McMillian, Eric Jerome Dickey, Zane and the Queen of Country Hood Love Stories Monica Walters. We can see why Kimberly's storylines are so captivating to her readers. She considers herself as a "freewriter", one that doesn't lay out an outline or draft, they just write what comes to them. Kimberly said she allows her characters to tell the story. Her inspirations come from a multitude of things, such as TV, music and even real-life situations. On several occasions she has been told that her stories feel real, and for Kimberly that was the intent. She wants to bring her readers to another world, but she also wants it to feel like it is possible to the point where it feels familiar.

Ms. Brown has published 30+ novels so far and she is far from stopping any time soon, besides we don't think her fans want her to. Her biggest goal is to walk in a top-tier bookstore and see her novels perched on the shelves with the other popular authors in her genre. An achievement any and every author strives for, to know that the masses finally see your worth. Another goal or aspiration she has is to see one of her novels produced into a feature film and we at The River's Edge Writers feel the Jareau Family series would be a perfect fit for the big film industry. You haven't heard or know of the Jareau Family series or novels? It's a collection of novels based on one family and Kimberly locks in when it comes down to Jamison, Cartel, Walker, Alaina or Resse. Five siblings that navigate life, love, drama and a little humor in their world. The beginning of this year the Jareau Family series has been Kimberly's main focus and she's planning on releasing those novels soon for her fans.

" This book was a wild ride for sure. Let me just start by saying that I am new to this author and have read a few of her books already. I absolutely love the family dynamic in all of her books."
"Whew, what an emotional story. Very well written, great storyline and character development. I was interested in Cartel and Adina from book one of this series."

Kimberly's fans truly love the work she puts out and if we would put more of their reviews on here it would truly take up the entire article. this freewriter has had a few opportunities to meet a few of her readers and the loving support they poured out to her was truly heartfelt. The idea of doing a book signing or attending another expo is always a welcoming idea for her. None in the near future but this passionate writer loves the fact that her works are loved so much.

"Writing is absolutely a passion...I use it to address the topics of mental health in the black community. So many of us go through trauma and we don't get the help we need to heal. So many people feel alone in their situations and I love writing things that everyday people can relate to."

Now that right there was Kimberly Brown preaching to the congregation for a minute and she speaking nothing but the truth. Now if you're not for some strange reason following Kimberly on social media, you know The River's Edge Writers got you. Below you can find her everywhere you surf...
