Corlissa Dobson is an aspiring author with 5 self-published nonfiction urban novels. She writes what she knows, and this woman has a lot to share. Born in Alexandria, Louisiana, Corlissa was the youngest of three children. Being the baby girl had its challenges, but it all became the foundation to the author's creation. Corlissa's first love of storytelling came from where most literary creatives find it, and that was from school. She expressed how her teacher would read books from the renowned children's author Judy Blume and how the stories helped her at a young age. Corlissa would write poems and short stories, merely for her own pleasure as a teen but thought nothing of it. After high school she joined the Army and served our country for almost 4 years. Constantly reading and writing in her spare time.
"My life is where my topics come from...life inspires me."
Being in the Army allowed Corlissa to see the world through a different set of lenses and living in Alexandria wasn't the fit for her. She moved to New Orleans after the military and her passion for writing continued. Her personal poems got her through some rough times as job offers for a disabled vet was scarce. Odd jobs paid the bills, going back to school occupied her mind but then she was offered a job that was considered taboo. In the late 90's early 2000's, the Exotic Dance Industry was growing in the city of New Orleans. The money flow did more than just pay the bills and Corlissa couldn't pass up the opportunity. Writing began to fall to the wayside, but she still enjoyed reading from time to time. It wasn't until after surviving Hurricane Katrina that her focus on getting her story out became priority to her. Still with that military mindset of "I'm a do it myself", Corlissa self-published her first non-fiction 300 plus paged novel "Tale of a Louisiana Stripper". The novel touched on her life, the trials she encountered, the risks she took, the affects it had on her and how she conquered it. The love she received from fans, who read the book, was an outpour Corlissa didn't know she needed, and it only fueled her to write more.
"Whoever said stripping was easy, or wasn't a job, was wrong. It is the Fast Food of the Entertainment Industry...It's the female version of The Trap."
Corlissa's writing skills grew with every story, manifesting into a literary creative. She continued with her non-fictious novels because her fans demanded it. So "The Devil's Playground" made its appearance followed by "Learning 2 Let Go", "Her" and "Life After Incarceration". Corlissa would love for any or all of her books to find themselves as a TV series or movie and we at The River's Edge Writers wouldn't put it past her at accomplishing that feat.
